Apple to ‘maybe’ end roaming charges, but not anytime soon!
This month an Apple Executive made a remark which has fuelled speculation that Apple might be moving into the Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) business.
The theory, which has been around for a few years now, is that Apple could combine multiple Mobile Network Operators (MNO) to create a super carrier or operator without roaming charges.
As a business focused on Mobile IT, we’re always looking for ways to reduce roaming charges or even better… new ways to avoid them!
However, even if the roaming issues are resolved this is merely the symptom of the bigger issue, which is that mobile data consumption is set to increase over an already phenomenal rate. Just imagine what 4k content will do to your data bundle and how MNOs will ensure they have adequate capacity on their networks without significant investment on top of their already very high costs!
Lump in proposed new government taxes which are set to triple some of the MNO’s charges to use the airwaves, or spectrums, and at some point surely they will need to find new ways to charge for their networks, especially if we’ve helped you eradicate their roaming data charges.
Whilst you wouldn’t bet against Apple making a ‘profitable’ success of an Apple Virtual Network, estimations are it won’t be happening for a few years.
